The Hellenic Initiative New Leaders is coming to London with an Inaugural event at The Orange Pimlico Room on the 27th of June!

An international group of like-minded professionals 21-40 years of age who actively believe in investing in the future of Greece through direct philanthropy and economic revitalization. New Leaders are Greeks and Philhellenes of the Diaspora who are passionate about working together (Oli Mazi) to fundraise, donate their time, resources, skills and expertise in helping to build a better future for Hellas.

The Hellenic Initiative will share information about their work in Crisis Relief and Economic Development in Greece in a fun evening of meeting one another over some drinks and nibbles.

What is the Hellenic Inititative New Leaders?

Greeks everywhere are coming to The Hellenic Initiative to support their country through fundraising events, and the latest two events have proven that not only is the Initiative doing successful work, but that its base is rapidly growing, especially amongst young people.

Founded in 2012, The Hellenic Initiative has raised over $15 million for Greece. These funds have gone towards humanitarian aid, crisis relief, and economic and entrepreneurial development within the country. But perhaps its most important contribution is the manner in which it has created a cohesive community, one that is striving to inspire positive change for Greece and its people.

The Hellenic Initiative New Leaders program includes diaspora Greeks from 21-40 years old who are invested in Greece’s economic recovery and, ultimately, its future. The strength of this program is clear: On Thursday, February 7, 2019, the Hellenic Initiative held its New Leaders cocktail party in Boston, and another in New York City on Friday, February 8, 2019. At these events combined, almost 300 people attended, The Hellenic Initiative made over $27,000 already in 2019, and there’s much more to come!

Drake Behrakis, THI Board member and co-chair of the Boston event, noted he was “very pleased with the turnout.” While Stephanie Kacoyanis, also co-chair of the Boston event, stated that she was pleased with the number of new faces, adding, “Lots of people stayed well past 9 and truly enjoyed themselves!”. And New York attendee (and raffle winner) Justin Bozonelis said, “Last night rocked, what a great turnout and party!”.

These events add to a growing list of accomplishments the Hellenic Initiative has made in the past few years. They partner with well-known organizations including Doctors of the World and Together for the Children, but also assist up-and-coming groups like Ithaca Laundry, which offers mobile laundry services to the homeless in Athens. They also work with the HOME project, addressing the needs of unaccompanied refugee children.

This growth is exciting, and we expect to see even more at an upcoming event on June 27th in London!

What is the purpose of Kivotos tou Kosmou (Ark of the World)?

All proceeds will benefit Kivotos tou Kosmou (Ark of the World) a Charitable Nonprofit Organisation providing special care and protection to mothers and children. It is first and foremost intended and addressed to young unprotected children, most of whom come from single-parent families, and to many children without parents, who experience difficult circumstances, neglect, abandonment, lack of medical care and uncertain future.

The Ark fully covers and takes care of unprotected children.. In collaboration with Prosecutors for Children, protection agencies and services for children’s rights, it undertakes to raise children in its four (at present) accommodation homes. They are children (infanthood to adulthood) who have been subjected to abuse, neglect and very bad living conditions. Children live in large homes with instructors and care givers for their everyday life, like a large family, without any reminders of institutional care.

A primary concern of the Ark is not to separate the family when there is parent interest in and capable of taking care of the child. Single-parent families with serious financial and social problems calling on our services can find support for their very basic needs, such as food, clothes, medical care and everything they need to live with dignity. At the same time, families receive counseling services, take part in parents’ groups led by family relations specialists and receive information on training programmes in order to be empowered to take responsibility of their children.

The Ark of the World was established in 1998 in Athens by 26-year-old Father Antonios Papanikolaou, who was armed with love for children, a selfless need to give and the desire to create a nest of affection and care for children, young people and parents in need, living in the crevices of society, in “another” Athens at the region of Akadimia Platonos.

The Ark of the World was born out of the great concern of Father Antonios who, as a young clergyman then, was worried about his congregation at risk, wandering, lost in their ignorance, away from Mother Church that is the only Ark of Salvation. Father Antonios and his wife Stamatia have literally devoted their life to the titanic struggle to improve the living conditions of their fellow people through the prism of God’s grace and word.

“We saw at the Saint George square children who should be at school wandering around without any purpose in life, in ignorance and danger lurking beside them. We felt inside the need to open up to these marginalized children and impart the message of hope and Life”
Father Antonios
