  1. A fascinating lecture, titled “Staging the Greeks in the 21st Century: Adaptation, Re-contextualisation, and the Ethics of Directing”, was given last Thursday 14 February at the Nash Theatre, King’s College London, by Assistant Professor at Open University of Cyprus, Dr. Avra Sidiropoulou. The lecture was part of the Cyprus Lecture Series at King’s, which is co-organised by the Cultural Section of the Cyprus High Commission in the UK and the Centre for Hellenic Studies at King’s.

  2. The High Commissioner of Cyprus, Mr. Euripides Evriviades, opened the event with a welcoming note, in which he introduced the speaker and also thanked Professor Gonda Van Steen, Koraes Chair of the Centre for Hellenic Studies, KCL, and Dr. Marios Psaras, Cultural Counsellor at the High Commission, for continuing a long tradition of collaboration between King’s and the High Commission, highlighting the importance of such events for the promotion of cultural exchange and dialogue between Cyprus and the UK.

  3. Dr. Sidiropoulou, who is also a director herself, began her lecture by presenting theoretical approaches to the concept of adaptation and its function in contemporary productions of Greek drama. She, then, analysed different ways such approaches are applied on stage with reference to specific productions that have been presented in Cyprus, Greece, USA and UK. A very lively discussion followed with an enthusiastic audience, which included academics, students, directors, actors, and, generally, people with an interest in performance arts and Greek drama. More issues were raised in the discussion, such as the use of technology in contemporary theatre, spatiotemporal re-contextualisation, and the fundamental aesthetic issue of the binary freedom-faithfulness.
