Why Pilates?

by Dorita Vardikou

Nowadays Pilates is very popular. Do not tell me you haven’t seen Mary Sinatsaki and Doreta Papadimitriou using the Reformer Pilates... Come on People! it is all on their insta profiles! I have seen David Beckum using it!! And what if they use it? And what if they are doing Pilates! I agree thousand times! Although they are not doing it because it is trendy and cool, they are doing it because it is safe and efficient.

Pilates improves posture and muscle strength as well as balance and joint mobility. All that, because it increases body awareness and teaches you how to train safely. At the same time while practicing Pilates you release tension and stress.

Pilates transforms you inside out by training the inner unit - the deep core or if you have heard the famous power house.

Inner unit: Imagine you have a cylinder, the diaphragm is the lid, the obliques are the sides/transverus abdominis, multifidus the back and pelvic floor the base. These muscles work together to provide support for the entire body.

Why Pilates and not any other exercise?

Because Pilates is the only exercise method which prevents injuries and smoothes musculoskeletal pains. Pilates has low impact on the spine and the joints and that is because the exercises are designed to follow the human body anatomy. The limbs are moving within the natural range of movement of the joints and your “enemy” is only the gravity and yourself.

The gravity, because it naturally pulls you down and you need to activate your muscles to stand tall, workout seated upright providing neutral spine, as well as in four point kneeling - all fours - and many more positions. And here is the role of yourself. While doing Pilates you need to train your body to do all these things consciously and not unconsciously as the body used to do
before. By doing Pilates you train the brain to give orders to specific muscles isolating them from the big muscle groups. And I feel that I have to add here, that the most common feedback from the clients after their first session is that they have discovered new muscles on their body. Believe me, these muscles did always exist on their body but they were working unconsciously or they were “lazy” and they were passing their duty to bigger muscle groups.

Additionally, while practicing Pilates you focus more on what you are not moving instead of what you are moving. This is the way you increase body awareness, you protect your back and your joints from pain and you release tension.

So, in case you would like to have a nice, strong and functional body with lean muscles and no back or joint pain? Do Pilates!!
