Launch of the new Cambridge Centre for Greek Studies
by GreeksConnect Team
Cambridge University has a long and rich tradition of study of both the history, culture, and languages of the Greek peninsula and its associated territories, and of the many disciplines which fall within the broad area of "Greek Studies." Cambridge scholars have enjoyed great academic success and achievements in this field and the University enjoys a strong national and international profile.
Cambridge University is now launching a new Centre devoted to the study of the history, culture, and language of the Greek peninsula and associated territories, from prehistoric times to the present day. The Center for Greek studies has been devised to highlight and give greater access to the range of first-class research, expertise, and teaching which exists throughout the University's 900 years of existence. Working with others around the world, it will use all these resources to encourage the synthesis of new and unique ideas on the historical importance of Ancient Greece and its influence in the 21st Century. At the same time it will develop and promote a wider understanding of modern-day Greece, its links with its past, and its place in the current and future global structure.
Using 21st Century technology to foster dialogue across the planet, the Centre will produce vibrant and fascinating insights which will seek to shed new light on old subjects and question conventional wisdoms. There is also the intent on widening interest in the subject by reaching out to people who would not normally think of Greek Studies as interesting or relevant to them. The Centre will leverage all forms of communication, especially the opportunities created by the internet and social media and will promote engagement with schools to foster an interest in future generations.
The launch will feature a symposium entitled "The Long Antiquity: Greece and Greek throughout the Ages." Featuring speakers at the forefront of academic research and discourse, the symposium will explore, and question, the idea of Greek continuity throughout the ages.
