The Benefits of Pilates
by Dorita Vardikou
I get off the tram, yes tram... in Athens, getting into a gym asking for group classes appropriate for back pain. The polite receptionist says with confidence: "You should try the Pilates class!" and miraculously a light switched on in my head telling me: you knew that! The surgeon had mentioned!
And there was me starting Pilates, after having a spinal operation at the age of fifteen, to fix my scoliotic spine. Not to mention at that particular session I was out of alignment, I could not follow the breathing, I was overworking and shaking in easy exercises that the other participants were performing nicely. When the class was over, I was thinking: “OMG! This is not for me! Definitely not for me!”.
The following day, I woke up with a strange feeling like something was missing. My spine was feeling good although it needed something more to feel better. The workout! That was it. Then I continued going to the gym 7 days a week meeting my amazing teacher Gina Karakonstantinou, practicing Pilates and changing my life.
Joseph Pilates said: “In ten sessions you will feel the difference, in twenty sessions you will see the difference and in thirty sessions you will have a new body!”
And who can say he is wrong? Ask my classmates.. They could possibly remember me: short, chubby wearing glasses, not to mention the back brace and definitely not that confident.
Pilates increases body awareness, improves posture and muscle strength, as well as balance and joint mobility. At the same time, while practicing Pilates you release tension and stress. Indeed, Pilates puts you in the right direction! How? Is Pilates like yoga? Can I do Pilates? Is Pilates good for back pain? Should I be in pain while working out? Is the motto “no pain - no gain” a rule while exercising? Gain the summer body you always dreamed of by starting today! I will share my answers and secrets with you in the following months.
But firstly, I would like to introduce myself:
I am a qualified level 3 Pilates teacher and I will keep you company while exercising.
Welcome to Pilates world :)
